The alert caused the Marines to put on flak jackets and helmets while repositioning mortars to attack the "vehicle" some 2 miles from the troops. "How come you can't tell a vehicle from a camel?" asked one Marine in a company control center. "One has wheels, the other has legs," another Marine pointed out. "I can't believe we're chasing damn camels around the desert," said a third. Marine spokesman Capt. Stuart Upton said Marines reported a camel nosing around their foxhole Tuesday night and shots were fired to chase the animal from a nearby airstrip. It could not be confirmed that the camel that led to Wednesday's alert was the same animal.
